I’ve found myself with too much makeup and stuff I don’t use, and it’s time that it goes to a better home. Plus, I’m poor and unemployed. That should be reason enough.

I turned 24 yesterday. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t terribly excited about turning this new age. Why? It’s silly. When I was younger (maybe 8th/9th grade) I had always told myself that by the time I turned 24, I wanted to be married and have a great job and be living my dream life. 24 was just “that age” for me, we all had one. Once I hit 18 and went to college, I realized just how ridiculous my “plan” was, and didn’t think about it again for a long time and just decided to take life as it comes. About a month before turning 24, I remembered that silly little plan and found myself quite sad. I knew that it was ridiculous, but was also sad that it didn’t end up that way.
Yesterday, I decided to make the best of it, and take a “scary age” for me and make it into something fabulous. I had an awesome night planned, and decided that the whole entire DAY was going to be awesome. I took pictures of the various things I/we did, so be warned, this is picture heavy!
A few days before my birthday, I got this AMAZING package in the mail from Amanda! Not only did she give me one of the best cards I’ve ever seen (side note: this birthday has held AMAZING cards from everyone… good work!), she sent me a book that I know I’ll love, more postcards and some makeup goodies! She also sent me Season 3 of Bones to watch… but that one I’ll have to return to her. Sneaky lady, she’s king of the lab for that one!
Amanda’s card: “A Birthday Fairy Tale. Once upon a time, there was a princess who was like a size four or something. She could eat and drink whatever she wanted and always stayed really skinny and had flat, firm abs even though she never went to the gym. Every time she tried on jeans, the very first pair fit perfectly and made her butt look amazing. She lived in a great big, beautiful castle with her handsome, multimillionaire husband, who was busy all the time buying her giant diamonds, taking her to Hawaii, giving her foot massages, and telling her how beautiful she was. One day, she was eaten by a dragon and no one cared. The End.”
Birthday day! My dad likes to add little things to the calendar besides the numbers and the birthday cakes, so it was so cool to wake up and see not only the cake, but the little Phillies sign!
My mom is the best mom in the world, and she usually makes us breakfast for our birthdays or special occasions. She asked if I wanted the works, but I said that all I wanted was these tiny little cherry pie things. All it is is premade pie crust cut into circles with cherry pie filling thrown in the oven but GEEZ they are delicious. I ate entirely too many, but it was my birthday, so calories didn’t count.
At some point in the morning, Mary sent me such a special email. She told me a little white lie a while ago, and then surprised me on my birthday with something that made my heart soar (in such a geeky way). I have no picture of what she gave me because it lives on my computer screen at the moment, but I do plan on printing it out and keeping it forever. It made me feel so lovely, and I wish I could be that lovely in real life.
Before lunch, I opened up cards from my parents, brother and grandmoms. So very nice. I usually keep all my cards, and this year is no exception.
Will’s card (since the rest are gushy and personal): “A sister is someone who helps you through any trouble. Because she’s probably the one who got you in trouble in the first place.”
Lunchtime! We had a “very fancy” Wawa meal because we just wanted to get something in our stomachs before that night, and it was quick and easy so… there you go. I got my favorite sandwich, and my brother added in my favorite chips and favorite Wawa iced tea! Speaking of my brother…
… that’s right. He got me princess Silly Bandz for my birthday. I’m so glad he didn’t spend a ton of money and just got me something silly instead. We discovered these a week or so ago and are fascinated. I bought us a rock ‘n roll set, and I was so happy to have gotten the princess set. Yes, I’m obviously regressing. They’re just so pretty!
It was almost time to head out to the game, but before that…
… my best friend Kristen came over! She was coming to the game with us, so we decided to all take one car. She brought me TWO beautiful cards (one silly, one heartfelt, as per usual with us) and this gorgeous box from Russia. She lived there for a year teaching English and has brought me so many amazing goodies from there. Amber earrings, beautiful postcards and now this keepsake box! I have to find something super special to keep in there.
One of Kristen’s cards: “Friends like us understand how important it is to recognize birthdays. Count, no. Recognize, yes.”
Game time! We were seated in the very first row of the 400 level and you know what… it was AWESOME. We could see the game clearly and had perfect seats for fireworks. (Let’s all thank my dad for that one.) Our whole group was me, my mom, my dad, my brother, Kristen, my cousin Larisa, her husband Colin and my aunt and uncle. So. much. fun. I asked for them to not tell the Phillies it was my birthday because then they throw confetti at you, so we just pretended that my name was up on the big screen when they were going through the list. The best part that really made it feel like my name was up there? “Last of the American Girls” was playing. I got such a happy from that.
Once we hit midway through the game, it wasn’t looking so good for the Phillies. The game was 7-1 in favor of the Reds, so we were all kind of resigned that nothing was really going to happen. That’s a LOT to make up. So the fact that the Phanatic dressed up as Gaga and danced with a dance academy to “Telephone” was a real bright point. It was SO funny!
And then… the game completely changed. It was pretty much a birthday miracle. Bottom of the ninth, the Phillies got six runs to tie the game! Bottom of the tenth… another two to win it. It was so unreal. Two birthday wins in a row. Last year: a win and an inside the park home run. And fireworks. This year, another win, a foul pole home run and MORE fireworks. I think my birthday is lucky or something. And I’m pretty sure you’ll all know where to find me next year.
Please excuse the blur, I was doing this handheld and was more concerned with enjoying the show than getting a fabulous picture of it. The fireworks were, once again, out of this world. And I like to pretend that they were just for my birthday. Or, you know, America’s birthday. Whatever.
After the game, Kristen came home for a sleepover in my bed with me, and we watched an Olsen twins movie, New York Minute. It was just like when we were kids! I went to bed with a full heart, thankful that my birthday turned out to be such an amazing day.
As it turns out, my birthday wasn’t quite over yet! I got this absolutely beautiful card in the mail today from Megan and Jason, and it just reminded me how good I really do have it. Thanks for the mini birthday extension, you two, it was awesome! I love what Megan wrote in the card, “I predict that this year will be one of your best yet on a couple of levels, so don’t sweat getting any older.” I swear, sometimes that girl knows me better than I know myself.
I’m so thankful that so many of you remembered my birthday! It was so wonderful, I’m truly blessed. I went into that day preparing to still tell people that I was 22… and came out of it thinking that maybe 24 wouldn’t be so bad after all. Thank you to: Dad, Mom, Will, Kristen, Grandmom, Babcha, Mary, Larisa, Colin, Chocha & Vuyko, Megan, Jason, Marika, Uncle Harry & Aunt Barbara, Nikki, Lisa, Hayley, Liz C., Amanda S., Amanda B., Nik, Matt, Melissa, Fran & Joanne, Michal, Megan H., Carolyn, Devon, Eric, Michael T., Jess, Doug, Hannah, Michele, Davey, Allison B., Pete, Susie, Nicole, Erin K., Chris, Tom, Pat, Mandy, Katie L., Maeve, Nancy, Sarah M., Uncle Raym & Aunt Sally, Aunt Terry & Uncle Larry, Aunt Stacy, Morgan, Jo Anna, Jasmine, Lenora, Leah, Georgia, Alysha, Erin, Elise, Tobey, Sarah… and anyone else that I may have missed! Thank you for the best day I’ve had in a long time!
My lovely friend Amanda went to France recently, and she sent me Seasons 1 and 2 of Bones to keep me occupied while I couldn’t text her every moment of the day. Well, she’s created a monster.
I love the way the episodes are named. “The Woman in Limbo.” “The Superhero in the Alley.” “The Man in the Fallout Shelter.” “The Man in the Mansion.” Just about every episode (at least in the seasons I’ve watched) is named this way. The way the episodes are named suggests distance and generality. (Is that a word? I’m pretending it is.) Only by watching the episode do you realize that it isn’t general at all; each case is personal and (usually) heartwrenching. There’s so much more to the “woman in limo” and the “man in the fallout shelter” than the titles suggest. They were people, living people. And that’s exactly what the show is about. Finding dead people and putting a living face to them and figuring out why they died or were killed. Brilliant!
The writing on this show is impeccable. Once in a while you think there’s a plot hole or an unresolved story but they know exactly when you’re thinking that and pick up with that story in a later episode. Bravo, writers!
A word of warning to those buying these on DVD. The DVD says there are 6 episodes per disc for Season 1, and when you put it in, you only see 4. This is because the discs are double-sided, and the last 2 are on the other side. Confession time: this took me very long to realize. So, if you buy or rent these… turn the discs over. The story will go in order that way. Season 2 looks to be one-sided DVDs, like we’re normally used to.
Season 1:
I got off to a rougher start on the first episode, I’ll be honest. I was like, “Um, David [I call him David sometimes, instead of his character name] is being such a jerk to this woman and I’m not sure why or that I like it. And there’s corpses. Ew.” But I’m not one to give up on a show after just one episode, so I watched another. And that’s when I fell in love. Something about it just clicked for me, and I was hooked! The corpses still kinda gross me out, but it’s like it was with Dexter… the more you see, the less they bother you, because you’re focused on the work the characters are doing. And let me just say, the Season 1 finale was just… OMG. Very OMG. Thank God I had Season 2 waiting for me the second it was over!
Season 2:
I was a little worried going into Season 2. A lot of the episodes in Season 1 were standalones, and I wanted to see if there was an actual storyline developing, because I know it’s currently on Season 6. Well, there is a storyline, and that made me a happy camper. There are still the standalone episodes, but they were bringing in killers from Season 1 and establishing new ones that aren’t wrapped up, so I assume they continue into later seasons. My favorite episode from Season 2 is the one about Howard Epps. The title is something like, “The Man in the Cell.” Holy. crud. It was amazing. These people solving crimes are becoming more well-rounded as characters, and I really enjoy that.
Now, can we convince the powers that be to lower the prices of Seasons 3 and 4 so I can buy them already? Kthanks.
Here’s where I talk about the characters:
- Temperance Brennan. Bones (the nickname given to this character from Booth) is quite an odd bird. She’s so analytical and smart, and can’t always see things from a non-scientific point of view. It’s off-putting at first, and then I really warmed up to her. Good job, people making this show, I think that’s exactly what you were trying to do! She’s so complicated, yet so simple at the same time. She can think of a million and one ways to look at something, but you can usually predict how she’s going to react. And she’s funny! In the way that she’s a little socially awkward and not trying to be funny but ends up getting a good laugh from me. I thoroughly enjoy this character.
- Seely Booth. It’s no secret that I love David Boreanaz (wife-cheating at all). I went into this going, “David’s character is going to be my favorite no matter what.” And I was right! (I also love everyone else, but he’s still my favorite.) Booth is the smart-talking, funky-tie-wearing, hunky FBI agent. Love. him. But for as much as he goes against the grain within the FBI, he’s so traditional in his life when it comes to love and beliefs. Booth is traditional, where Bones will question the logic behind it all, and the way they go back and forth is phenominal. Plus, he’s sexy. Did I mention that already?
- Angela Montenegro. Okay, I’m not gonna lie, in the first few episodes, I pretty much hated Angela. It’s not that she’s an unlikeable character, she just didn’t “click” with me at first. So I ignored her. I forget what episode turned it around for me, but at some point suring Season 1, it was like, “Holy crap, Angela’s kind of awesome.” Oh, maybe it was that episode with the desert! Or the one with the little girl with cancer! (If you saw them you know what I’m talking about, if not, don’t mind me.) Now I like her, and am jealous of her mad art skillz and cool 3D crime machines. She’s sweet, yet self-assured and honest. She knows what’s up and doesn’t take crap from people. I wish I could be more like her sometimes.
- Jack Hodgins. He’s another one that I didn’t really love right off the bat. I didn’t dislike him, but he was just kind of… there. I think Amanda texted me one day and was like, “Don’t you just love Hodgins?!” so I decided to start paying more attention to him. He’s a hoot! It also helps that they brought him more into the main storylines so he was in the forefront more often. I won’t give it away, but I LOVE his backstory! He really evolves from a silly guy into a romantic guy, and that kind of makes me swoon.
- Zack Addy. He. is. just precious. Zack is the kid who’s always been lightyears ahead of everyone else, and because of that, is awkward around others. He’s Bones’ graduate student, so he’s part of the team. He and Hodgins do the zaniest experiments to find out what could have killed someone or what weapon the murderer used. They’re hysterical together. The interactions between Zack and Booth are also giggle-worthy. Sometimes he’s so out of place and lonely because he’s fact-based in thinking, and that just makes me want to give him a hug.
- Camille Saroyan. I was a little put off by her when she just appeared out of nowhere, but I think that was the point. Temperance Brennan is surprised by her appearance, and we as viewers are as well. Where Temperance is an expert on bones, Camille is an expert on flesh. It makes for an interesting point of tension. Overall, I’ve come to really like Camille, and I think she rounds out the group in the Jeffersonian quite well.
Okay, yeah, I probably left out a few characters but whatever. These are the main people, and the ones that stuck out in my head. Do you watch Bones? If you do, please don’t spoil further seasons for me! But let me know if you love this show as much as I now do! Furthermore, who has the rest of the seasons on DVD and wants to lend them to me?! (Amanda just bought Season 3 and sent it to me. She’s an angel!)
Okay, so this movie is getting a lot of crap from, well, everyone. Personally, I really liked it!
I will preface all of this by saying that I have NOT seen the original cartoon. I will also tell you that my brother owns them and because of this movie, I now want to watch them! I expect them to be way better and more detailed than the movie, since there’s at least 20-something episodes per season. It’ll probably be like Harry Potter… I like the movies and the books, but in different ways and for different reasons. I’m excited to start watching the cartoon! I expected almost nothing from this, because of all the terrible reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Yay:
- The casting. Absolutely loved it. Some of the peripheral characters were just “meh,” but the four pictured above were perfect in my eyes. I realllly loved the kid who played the Avatar and the guy who played Prince Zuko. They got me super excited to start watching the cartoon.
- I’ve heard gripes that they didn’t cast Asians like in the series, but you know what? I liked the diversity. Different types of people made everything more interesting to look at.
- Okay, forgive me for not knowing its name but… the flying thing that comes out of the bubble with Aang. It reminded me of the dragon in The Neverending Story! So cute! And the flying monkey too. I love cute, mystical animals.
- The costumes. Dude. I want to be a water bender. Not only am I a Cancer and have a water sign, but they get the best costumes and hair in the whole movie. Katara. Cool shoes, fuzzy jacket, awesome braided yet straight and loose hair. Sign me up!
- The story. Oh man, that world is so complicated and now I want to know everything! Don’t spoil it for me though!
- It’s superficial but… the glowing tattoo. Freaking cool.
- Also, I’d like to do random kung fu and have the elements bend to my will, kthanks.
- I hear Aang is much more childlike in the cartoon, but I really liked him being kind of burdened in the movie.
- Sequel now please!
Nay:
- It felt really rushed. Granted, it was hours of cartoons crammed into one movie, so yeah, I get it. I’m sure they could have done something differently though.
- The script was a litle sketchy at times. And by sketchy I mean, “I am going to tell you exactly what I am doing as I do it, leaving nothing to the imagination.” At times it was good, at times it was a bit too blunt. Did Melissa Rosenberg write it? It felt like it. Edit: M. Night Shyamalan wrote it. I’m not surprised. He should probably stick to directing.
- While I really liked it, I wish someone else had directed it. It could have been so much better than it was.
- 3D. Granted, I saw it regular because 3D makes me nauseous, but I just hate that things that don’t need to be 3D are getting released in it. Lame. James Cameron didn’t invent 3D, can we move on from this trend yet?
I’m sure that I’ll get flamed for hating Eclipseand loving The Last Airbender, but you know what? I don’t really care. I expected more from Eclipse and didn’t get it, and expected nothing from Airbender and came out being really fascinated by the cartoon series. I’m sure that once I see the cartoon I will find more faults with the movie, and that’s okay. I’m just excited to have found something new to watch!
Alright, I finally saw Eclipse. I say finally as if I should have seen it the second it came out, haha. Anyway. If you really loved the movie, you’re not going to love what I have to say. So, read if you feel like it.
I’m going to start off by saying that 1. I forget everything that happened in the book. I read it over a year ago and haven’t touched it since. 2. I wasn’t excited to see the movie at all. I’ve been feeling a bit overexposed within the Twilight world lately, so I just wasn’t ready and raring to go. No, I wasn’t determined to hate it. I was actually expecting to not be excited and then end up loving it, because twitter was going crazy with people screeching about how wonderful it was. I’m going to make this short, because the sooner I’m done with this movie, the better my life will be, haha! I might borrow points from my friends M & A, mostly because I agree with them. Girls, if I forget to credit what you said, just let me know!
The Good:
- Yes, it was better that Twilight and New Moon. That did not make it good.
- Billy Burke as Charlie was amazing. He does the whole awkward dad thing beautifully.
- Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria. She was leaps and bounds better than Rachelle. I’m not convinced Rachelle could have been as natural as Bryce in this.
- Xavier Whatshisname as Riley. First, those lips. Secondly, those eyes. Thirdly, he can kind of act. Like.
- Remember how I wanted New Moon to just be all Michael Sheen? Now I want Eclipse to be all Bryce and Xavier.
- The line, “I’m hotter than you.” Well played, Rosenberg, well played.
- The opening sequence. I knew what it would be because I read spoilers, and that was the one part where I can honestly say I was in awe and not disappointed one bit. It was fabulous.
- Anna Kendrick. Girlfriend can do no wrong.
The Bad:
- Michael Sheen was not in this movie. Obviously, I’m convinced he could have saved it.
- Carlisle’s accent. Here today, gone tomorrow. What’s the deal?!
- Jasper’s accent. Hi Jackson, you’re Southern. All you had to do was talk. And you still sounded weird.
- The acting. Kristen Stewart is getting better, but she’s not quite there yet. I don’t find Rob or Taylor particularly “hot,” so when you take that out of the equation, they’re pretty boring as actors. I actually almost fell asleep at one point when it was all, “angstangstbadactingangst.” A little girl (that I didn’t know) next to me poked me and asked me why I didn’t want to see Edward proposing. It was kind of priceless.
- People told me I was going to love the Jasper/Rosalie backstories. I did not. They were kinda lame. People were going nuts over the leaked photos so I thought they were going to be amazing. They were fine. I just wasn’t as wowed as I thought I would be.
- The makeup. Pale does not equal cakey. (Thanks M!)
- It felt really unnecessarily long. But maybe that was just because I was bored about halfway through. Did it feel long to anyone else?
- Can we just talk about why Bella was wearing old work clothes to a graduation party where everyone else was wearing nice dresses? Alice freakin’ flipped out in New Moon and made her wear a dress to a party that 7 people attended, but for a party attended by about 100, she lets Bella wear whatever she wants? Just throwing that out there.
- That proposal. Even for the King and Queen of Teen Angst… it was a bit too much.
- 90% of the cast seriously needs acting lessons. I’d be a lot more entertained if I actually believed these people as the characters.
- The end. Alright, Bella chose Edward. But all I heard her talking about was their life together and how they were going to tell Charlie and when can he make her a vampire again? I’m sorry, I thought she was supposed to choose Edward for the person he is, not the lifestyle he has.
The Ugly:
- Rosalie. First, why do her eyebrows never match her hair? Second, why did they make her Evita? Dislike!
- The wigs. I’m pretty sure Bella was wearing Jacob’s wig from the first movie. And since when does Alice have soccer mom hair?
- The special effects, as per usual. Summit, you’re making BANK. Please give the special effects people some more money.
- Dakota Fanning. She’s actually a great actress and I really like her, but she totally phoned this one in. Wasn’t buying it for a second.
- The engagement ring. I was scrolling through Letters to Twilight (the bestest snarkiest site ever) and someone suggested that Edward spray painted an armadillo silver. What they said.
Okay, so that’s it. I know I have a lot of bullet points under the good section, but look back and see how many of those are minor things, and how many major things pop up elsewhere. I should have trusted my gut in not being excited to see the movie, instead of thinking that becuase everyone else loved it, I would too. I should have saved my money and just rented it later. Oh well! Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
